News » "Pawełki" and the Feast of St. Paul of Thebes

On January 15, The Order of St. Paul the First Hermit observes the Feast of St. Paul of Thebes - the patron saint of the Pauline Order. 

Jasna Gora celebrates this feast with a traditional novena, the so-called "Pawełki". Each day of the novena at 6 pm the Pauline community gathers in the Chapel of St. Paul in the Basilica where hymns praising God in the life of St. Paul are sung. The faithful meditate on a Gospel passage and a short sermon by one of the monks. The final day of the novena brings children in particular as St. Paul is well known for his intercession for couples with fertility problems.

St. Paul the First Hermit, also known as St. Paul of Thebes was born around 227 AD. in the Thebaid region of Egypt.  He is best known in the West through an account of his life recorded by St. Jerome.
